Apollo_NEW_book cover with blurb

The amazing Judith Barrett

Hi Readers,

Recently I had the chance to interview a sweet, kind soul who also writes fabulous books.

Take a look at my interview with Judith A. Barrett:

  1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.

“The Girl Who Saw Clouds” is my favorite of my published books. It’s a compilation of all my interests-children with autism, farming, self-sufficiency, Florida weather, dogs, running, chickens, ham radio, baking brownies, offbeat humor, unicorns, pizza, and adventure.  I just gave you a synopsis of the entire book!

  1. Writing is a difficult endeavor. What makes you continue to write?

I have stories inside my head and heart, and I would explode if I didn’t let them out. I’ve always been a great storyteller, and I love learning. It’s been a struggle and a joy to learn how to transform those stories into words that invite the reader into the story on the page. I certainly agree it’s difficult and a lot of work.

“The Girl Who Saw Clouds” underwent 108 revisions before it was published. One of the things that kept me going was the encouragement of my beta readers who helped me see the improvements from one version to the next.

  1. What do you look forward to every day?

Every day I wake up ready for the day’s adventure with my husband and dogs. I’m a retired project manager, and I plan. I have a list for everything I’m going to do that day, that week, and that month. I have a five–year plan. I am thrilled every time I mark something completed. God, of course, knows how much I love to plan and frequently flips my plans to the side and says, “Nice plan. We’re going to do this instead.” His plans are always much more interesting than mine.

  1. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

I’ve always had two criteria for success: 1. Am I learning? 2. Am I having fun? If it’s not fun and I’m not learning, then it’s time to move on to something else. Maybe there’s one more thing-Did I get to check something off my list?

  1. Any tips for a newbie writer?

Consider any feedback as a gift, even negative feedback. Join a critique group. I like the online groups because I don’t have to show up anywhere at a certain time wearing shoes. Learn from everybody. Develop an eye for what’s good and what’s not. Read blogs and articles. Join a writers’ association. Attend workshops and seminars. Never publish a book before you hire an editor to review your manuscript. (Don’t be that guy.) Learn, learn, learn. And have fun!

The amazing Patty Perrin

Hi Readers,

Check out my Interview with this fabulous Author, Patty Perrin.  Her books will delight you!  Thank you so much, Mrs. Perrin for joining me today.

1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.

Terra’s Call is the first of a four-book Teen/YA Sci-fi series, and my first attempt at writing fiction. I learned so much as I wrote it, rewrote it, honed it, and was finally satisfied with it. It’s the story of four genetically enhanced teens who discover that they are the ones mentioned in an ancient Cherokee prophecy who would be tasked with saving the world from destroying itself. Except for the twins, Sky and Pax who grew up together, the teens meet for the first time in their senior year. They learn that truth is bigger than they thought, that they are capable of much more than they imagined, and that differences among the inhabitants of Terra (our Earth) don’t necessarily make them enemies – or friends.

I love writing for Young Adults and Teens because they have dreams and imagination, and if I can encourage their sense of wonder and give them something positive, uplifting, mysterious, adventurous, and with a touch of romance, then I’m satisfied.

2. Writing is a difficult endeavor. What makes you continue to write?

Before I finished the series, I couldn’t let my characters leave their task unfinished. The research alone was so much fun, thanks to my personal research assistant Google. I had no idea there are so many mysteries right here on our planet, or that quantum physics may hold answers to questions we don’t know how to ask yet.

Now that the series is written, I continue to have visions, ideas that keep coming, and the strong feeling that the Creator has partnered with me in writing. How could I not keep writing?

3. What do you look forward to every day?

Waking up, spending time with the Lord, and starting on my task list for the day. I tend to write in spurts, most notably the month of November, or National Novel Writing Month (Nanowrimo). I’ve started each of my fiction books with the 50,000 word challenge of that month. I finish it over the next few months, and then take a break to try to learn some marketing and get some of my own reading done.

4. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

When you’ve influenced the life of someone else for the better, that is success. When a young fan tells me I’m her favorite author, and she isn’t related to me – that is success. When my grandchildren read my books, write reviews and book reports on them… You get the picture. Success is having people read and enjoy the books I write. I wouldn’t discount being a best-selling author or earning a decent income from book sales, but I’m already successful

5. Any tips for a newbie writer?

Write! The more you write, the better you’ll get at it. Learn all you can about the craft of writing. Take classes, learn grammar and the difference between active and passive verbs, phrases and scenes. Learn about writing descriptions through action and dialogue. Once you’ve written something you’re excited about, get a lot of feedback, from Beta readers, friends, and editors, and don’t take criticism personally. View it as a learning experience, and don’t give up. You’re not too young to write well, and you’re not too old. Enjoy the journey.

  1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.                                                                                                                                               I like to think I haven’t written my favourite yet. I love Kira and Carter like they are family. Carter has been with me a very long time so I love writing anything with them in it. But my favourite hasn’t been written yet. It’ll test me and push me. It’ll make me cry and bring me joy. I push myself a little more each time I write so I’ll get my favourite one day 🙂
  2. Writing is a difficult endeavor. What makes you continue to write?                                                                                                                                                                   I started writing when I was signed off work with depression. I found my love of reading again and that sparked the fire to write. I have many half finished pieces dating back to my teens but it was when I was in the darkest part of my life that I found a light in reading, an escape. It helped me find my own story and I wanted to tell it. Eyes Open started one night when I was just typing out random thoughts and it actually ended up being a whole book. The first long story I’d ever finished and it lead to more. It’s knowing that my writing can let someone escape that keeps me writing. Someone helped me escape, so I want to give others that chance.
  3. What do you look forward to every day?

I look forward to seeing my family everyday. When I wake up the first two things I see are my husband and my cat, closely followed by my kids. I look forward to hearing the bird song before I go to work and I look forward to finding chances to pay it forward. I make it my goal to do one good deed each day for someone else. no personal gain, just to pay the good feeling forward. It can be holding a door open or letting someone out of a junction at rush hour. small things make big changes.

4. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

Success is different to everyone. Some days success is just being able to get up and make it out of the door in the morning. I like to think of success as a series of small victories that are progressively more numerous than the failures. Although it’s the failures that teach you how to achieve the success and value it more. Being humble and appreciative of what I have makes me successful in my eyes.

5. Any tips for a newbie writer?

Have faith in your story. Writing comes with time, experience and knowledge but stories come from imagination, dreams and a wealth of life experience. A well known gentleman who created an entire world on a disc (R.I.P Terry) once wrote back to me when I asked for advice and his words stuck with me. Write about what you know and life a full life. I now know the wisdom in his words. Life experience is a pool you can draw from. Heart-ache, joy, relief, sadness, grief, love, lust, hatred, anger, they are all ink in your pen, words in your arsenal. A full life is what everyone should live for. Live on the edge of your comfort zone and keep pushing the boundary back. The founder of the Scouting Association, Baden-Powell once said:

Try to leave this world a little better than you found it and, when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best.”

I believe in everything we do in this life we should try to better ourselves and make the world a little better 🙂
